WORLDBREAKER AND AMBER BLACK
THE INNOCENT SKIER AND KRYSTAL YHATE
WORLD'S AND IAN'S WORKOUT FOR THE UP AND COMING CUP
There was an aura of business and work about this workout. Both Amber and Krystal had already discussed what would transpire during this workout. Ian and World would come face to face for one mile, and only one would come out on top. Which would it be, Galaxy Ruler or Worldbreaker? Both treasured, but both slightly left behind by the foal crop. They were expected to do more this year; they were expected to prove themselves as capable racehorses. Like Fire's rise to sudden power last year, they were expected to rise. Rise, and take the crown that they should have gotten ages ago. Quietly, side by side, the bay and the chestnut walked. World walked peacefully, enjoying the reawakening of the world around him. It was finally springtime. Ian, on the other hand, was distant. He walked, only aware of his rider's cues, and appeared detached.
As one, Amber and Krystal had their stallions begin to canter. World's strides were long and ate up the turf. Ian's were shorter, but efficient. However, both stallions were swift as they sped across the turf. Amber threw a glance at Krystal, and Krystal nodded. They would canter for a half mile before getting started on the real stuff. And that half mile went quickly. The bay and chestnut worked off of each other's individual feelings of competitiveness. Add that to the fact that they had worked together before, and you had a competitive pair. And it wasn't just the horses that got competitive - their riders got the urge to compete, too. Today, they had a quick four furlong gallop, nothing strenuous. The jockeys wanted their mounts to have a fantastic first start to the season.
All warmed up now, Amber and Krystal exchanged a quick glance. Both satisfied, they began to gallop their horses. Ian leaped into a faster pace quicker than World, eagerly running along. World caught up quickly, not wanting to be left behind, and the two had a silent battle for the first furlong. By the end of that, Ian was pulling ahead slightly. He was far more agitated than World. World had always been the calm one that was fazed by nothing. Ian was a bit more energetic. Though usually detached, he focused completely during races. The physical task attracted his attention, and it was impossible to ignore the herd instinct as well as the stallion's will to lead. This was a guiding principle of colt racing - the desire to lead.
The gallop was over quickly. There was not much to say about it. The two four year olds had gone out, galloped for half a mile, challenging each other for each hoofstep, and now they were obediently slowing down under the hands of their riders. A note of maturity touched them slightly. Amber had noticed that World seemed even more receptive to her commands than usual. Ian, on the other hand, appeared more energized and far more connected than he usually was. It was glaringly obvious, then, that both horses were prepared for their first starts of year eleven.
